At the Foot of the Mountain

For the past two mornings, I have been visiting a peaceful place at the back of the apartment complex, which is where many of the residents have a small plot of land and have planted a small garden (picture on the left). Yesterday I met a man, Mr. Suh, who showed me his garden with hot pepper plants, catnip, leeks, and potatoes. (I was surprised that there was no cabbage for kimchi.) Mr. Suh has an interesting background. He's an 81 year old retired English teacher, who taught English to Japanese middle school students during WWII and English to himself during the Korean War.
This peaceful area at the back of the apartment complex also has two human-made waterfalls (picture on the right). It's a wonderful place to come in the morning, to see the Koreans gardening, to read, to think and to write.
