Course Objectives

* In this class, we will work on improving students’ skills in listening and speaking. We will focus on improving students’ understanding of basic communicative discourse and participating meaningfully in group discussions. We will provide opportunities for students to practice oral and aural skills in various contexts by utilizing role-plays, debates, presentations, audio recordings, possible field trips, and others. Students will be expected to actively participate in class and give individual and group presentations.

By the end of this course, students will have opportunities to:

1. improve their speaking and listening skills.

2. learn new expressions including idioms.

3. increase self-confidence in speaking English.

4. increase their awareness to various world Englishes and cultures.

5. learn and apply common stress and intonation patterns in English.

6. develop strategies in communicating effectively, being a good listener, giving effective presentations.

7. use the language in appropriate contexts.

8. develop their English teaching abilities.

Course Policies

*Attendance - Class attendance is mandatory and will be taken at each class meeting. It is important that you attend each class. Please be on time!

*Homework - All work must be handed in on time. In-class assignments and missed homework cannot be made up. Also, late homework will not be accepted.

*Grading – A single grade, S for Satisfactory or U for Unsatisfactory, is given based on your performance (attendance, assignments, participation and presentations) in the class.

*Student Responsibilities - When you come to class, you are expected to be prepared, stay for the full time, pay attention and participate. Please completely turn off your cell phones while in class.
